Robert Pattinson's descent into madness was a stunning performance, and what's better, that it's the second best performance in the movie. Willem Dafoe captured every scene in which he was, even when staring at Winslow from far away.
Winslow's dreams and nightmares got gradually even darker and darker and the final scene at the Fresnel Lens (thanks wikipedia) was a perfect ending. Whatever he sees in the light was so beyond his understanding, that in a Lovecraftian fashion, his sanity is torn into shreds.
In one of the nightmares, Wake is shown towering over Winslow with light coming out of his face. The movie is full of well built symbolism and ways to interpret the story. Both, the relationship of the lighthouse with each of the men, and the surfy relationship between the two men was so multilayered and each scene gave so much more to think about the movie.
The movie is full of other references to other stories and legends, like Icarus and Prometheus. After reading Eggers' interviews I must watch this again as soon as possible.
The aspect ratio supported the film's claustrophobia, many scenes were so barely lit that most of the time I forgot about the narrow ratio. The soundtrack supported every scene very well and even silence was used in perfect places.
For the fans of It Follows, Under the Skin, The Witch (obviously) and Midsommar. The Killing of a Sacred Deer! There's a bleak black comedy side to the movie too.
